Groundhog’s Day and Déjà Vu All Over Again

In the 1993  film Groundhog Day, Bill Murray  plays Phil Connors, a character who finds himself in the unenviable position of awaking day after day to the same (Groundhog’s) day.  The memories of the day before are still fresh, but the calendar date has not changed.

Healthcare Reform “Salami Style”

Back in the days when I was on the faculty of medicine, there was a rather pejorative phrase used to describe the practice of authors who would dole out results of a study piecemeal, in “slices” spread out over the largest practicable number of publications, thereby maximizing the number of CV entries per study.  It was called “Salami Science.”

In case there were any doubts about the inevitability of substantive healthcare reform, the recent conversion of Senator Arlen Specter (R PA, now D PA) to the Democratic Party should now put those doubts to rest.  Even closer now to the 60 percent majority needed to end potential filibusters, the Democratic Senate may now be able to move reform...

Richard Bankowitz, MD, MBA
Dr. Bankowitz currently serves as vice president and medical director for Premier Healthcare Informatics. His blog will focus on measuring healthcare quality, the use of HIT to improve patient quality and safety, and the changing healthcare delivery environment.

A board-certified internist and a medical informaticist, Dr. Bankowitz has devoted his career to improving healthcare quality by promoting rigorous, data-driven approaches to quality improvement and by engaging senior clinicians and healthcare leaders.

He began his career at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine as an assistant professor of medicine and medical informatics.

Prior to joining Premier, Dr. Bankowitz was medical director at CareScience, where he was responsible for strategy, product delivery, consulting, sales and advocacy efforts. He also has previously served as the corporate information architect of the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC). Dr Bankowitz holds an MD and an MBA from the University of Chicago; he completed a National Library of Medicine graduate traineeship in medical informatics, and he is a Fellow of the of Physicians.
