Alabama Hospital Links Medical Devices to EMR

(12/2/2009)
UAB Hospital, a 900-bed facility that is part of the Birmingham, Ala.-based UAB Health System, has implemented Kansas City, Mo.-based Cerner Corporation’s CareAware MDBus solution.

According to the company, the solution links medical devices directly to the EMR to create a Single Source of Truth for data, which enables nurses to spend more time at the patient’s bedside, and helps to improve safety by reducing the likelihood of data-transcription errors.

Since deploying CareAware MDBus, UAB has improved nursing efficiency by 92 percent; improved retroactive charting by 97 percent; improved device connectivity troubleshooting by 97 percent; and improved patient-to-device association by 89 percent, it touts.

The UAB Health System is a not-for-profit partnership between the University of Alabama Board of Trustees and the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation. Included under its umbrella are The Kirklin Clinic, Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, The Kirklin Clinic at Acton Road, Spain Rehabilitation Center, UAB Health Centers and UAB Highlands.
