Healthcare Industry Reacts to Landmark Supreme Court Ruling

Sharon F. Canner, senior director of advocacy programs for the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), weighed in with her approval of the ruling.

“The wheels set in motion by the Affordable Care Act, as affirmed by the Supreme Court of the United States, continue to turn,” Canner said in a statement. “Delivery reform and payment reforms such as Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), Bundled Payments and Patient Centered Medical Homes (PCMHs), are the future of healthcare. The ACA enables the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to serve as a platform to scale such innovations to hundreds of millions of beneficiaries, and the lessons learned through hundreds of demonstration projects will help the nation achieve the kinds of healthcare transformation needed to achieve better outcomes, better population health and lower costs.”

Tom Van Coverden, President and CEO National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), also was satisfied with the ruling.

“The overall ruling will allow most of the ACA to proceed to full implementation.  We are especially pleased that the Court’s decision reaffirms support for expanding access to health care through the nationwide network of Community Health Centers to more people in more communities across America.  This means that in the years ahead millions of newly insured people, and communities identified as medical shortage areas, will gain access to doctors, nurses and other health care professionals, and the quality, cost-effective primary and preventive services our health centers provide,” he said in a statement.
