National Coordinator shares a message of optimism and urgency at the HCI Executive Summit, lays out ONC priorities

Mostashari laid out for his audience what he called ONC’s overall five-year plan across five key domains. Among the top priorities for ONC in the near term, he said, will be:

  • achieving adoption and information exchange through the meaningful use of health information technology;
  • improving care for individuals, improving population health, and reducing healthcare costs through the use of HIT;
  • inspiring confidence and trust in HIT;
  • empowering individuals [consumers] with HIT to improve their health and the healthcare system;
  • achieving rapid learning and technological advancement.

Mostashari’s address came at the start of a day-and-a-half summit event, during which industry leaders and observers have been discussing such crucial topics as the key challenges in IT infrastructure facing CIOs attempting to move forward on meaningful use; the challenges and opportunities inherent in building teams of clinical informaticists; health information exchange developments; data privacy and security issues; and the challenges of recruiting top IT talent.
