What’s most important with regard to staffing for an EHR implementation team, as one is moving into the initial stages of an implementation? Is it more important to look at formal college degrees, or core competencies from experience 11/13/14

If an organization was in their initial stages of the EHR journey, what advice would be best to share as they are selecting IT employees to form their team? As a clinician, clinical administrator with little background in the world of IT, this can be a daunting task with financially devastating consequences if not done appropriately. Would team selection criteria be more directed toward IT college degrees or core competencies from experience.

What everyone has told us at HCI is that core competencies from experience are by far the most important qualifications needed in building an EHR implementation team. Like anything else that is practical, involves many, many tasks, and unfolds over time, EHR implementation requires strong real-world experience. Put another way, the best people to help implement an EHR have already implemented an EHR. This is particularly so with regard to EHR go-lives, because the complexity of the processes involved is quite significant.
