I’ve talked about the value of LinkedIn pretty regularly here on HCI. What it is, how to make connections and even how to be polite about the whole networking with strangers thing. As someone who works with both Healthcare IT candidates and employers, I hear LinkedIn success stories daily from both sides, and actually have one myself, since a LinkedIn connection is what initially diverted my career path to this fine industry. So when it comes to the importance of maximizing the resources of LinkedIn, I get it. However, since I have added C-Level sourcing to my list of services, now I REALLY get it.

I’m hearing from candidates and recruiters that hospital hiring managers and/or the hiring powers that be are dragging their feet when it comes to communicating their feedback and desires in regard to the candidates submitted. I heard from a very disappointed candidate just this morning who, after not hearing from her #1 choice after her interview 5 WEEKS AGO accepted another position, and then – guess what?

I’m a huge proponent of the power of Social Media. I write about it for anyone who’ll read it, talk about it to anyone who’ll listen, and utilize the strengths of the various channels in my own business every single day. Heck, I’ll even jump in and defend it when one of my colleagues rants about keeping a lid on it! Social Media channels, such as my personal favorite, LinkedIn, are unmatched when it comes to providing access to colleagues you know, and those you’d like to know better. And yes, it even provides access to those you really don’t care to know, at least at the moment. You know who I’m talking about – those pesky recruiters.

Perhaps you’re in the exciting position of just getting your EMR implementation “project” off the ground. Maybe you’ve already rolled up your sleeves, rallied the troops, planned your work and are working the plan. Or alternatively, you may be in the envious position of basking in the light at the end of the tunnel (but is there ever really an end to this tunnel?). No matter where you are in the process, of one thing I’m certain: At some point you will need to hire additional help to make it all meaningful.

I had a conversation with a stranger in the airport as we waited for our next plane delay. “Terri,” a NICU nurse from a “major” medical center in the Boston area (she didn’t mention which one), was traveling to visit her parents for a long weekend, and we struck up a friendly conversation. She had been working in the NICU for five years, she tried not to get attached to the babies but of course she loved each and every one of them, and she couldn’t imagine herself doing anything else. After having just read the results of a study that found that nearly half of hospital employees are “discontent” in their work, this news was wonderful to hear. Upon hearing what I did for a living, however, her mood immediately changed.

As one of Healthcare Informatics “Career” bloggers, I usually write about Healthcare IT workforce and career development topics, and leave the more technical, in-the-trenches type of subjects to my blogging colleagues who are experts in these areas. But as a patient I certainly have an opinion about what I’d like to see as the end result of this electronic healthcare revolution we find ourselves in the very heart of, and something occurred last week that made me stop and wonder, are we forgetting to sweat the small stuff?

Estimates based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Department of Education (ED), and independent studies indicate a shortfall of approximately 51,000 qualified health IT workers over the next five years. To that end, on Friday, April 2, 2010, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced awards totaling $84 million to 16 universities and junior colleges to help support the training and development of more than 50,000 new health IT professionals.

My calendar says Day 3, but if you’d ask my feet they’d probably argue that it’s got to be at least Day 103. I’m beginning to have fantasies about
