I’m here to share a few of the major messages that resonated during this convention. So without further ado, here are my notes, grouped by subject area. I'll try to share the names of the presenters where I can, since the presentations and audio are available to AHIMA members.

Mark Hagland asked me if I would blog about the passing of Steve Jobs and how his genius relates to us working in HCIT. I’m both pleased and honored to do so. Here are my thoughts.

The 83rd annual convention of AHIMA is getting underway as I write this, and with it HIM is at the center of the biggest regulatory reforms in most of our careers, ARRA/MU and ICD-10.

Going back to my analogy in Part I, having a GPS for guidance while driving, even when its recommendations are not followed or even needed, is a good thing. It may lead to the safest and best way to reach your destination, but at the very least, it provides choices to make a more informed decision.

I work with a team of very talented and dedicated people. We spend much of our time evolving and enhancing our EMR based upon a combination of advances in the technology, user-defined input, and anticipated user needs moving forward. One of the most important goals we have is to evolve the system in ways that make physician adoption and use easier by developing EMR capabilities that create real value for improving patient care and safety.

In recent days and weeks, a flurry of articles and white papers has been written in response to the proposed Accountable Care Organization regulation. In simple terms, there is broad consensus that we have great people and institutions involved in delivering care today. If we use technology wisely, subject to reasonable regulation, we should be able to improve value (access, quality, and cost), through better decision making and coordination of care.

Physician documentation plays a critical role in the Meaningful Use process. Current research makes an interesting point that should encourage us to rethink the functionality of physician documentation tools so they better address the priorities required to make them effective.

Electronic Physician Documentation is quickly becoming recognized as a nightmarishly messy and incoherent linchpin to Meaningful Use. Electronically capturing documentation previously done on paper or through dictation sounds pretty straight forward. It’s not.

Every vendor involved in ARRA certification, inpatient and eligible ambulatory care provider, has rolled its newly certified code to a beta client or two, on the path to demonstrate Stage 1 Meaningful Use. This will be the first relevant experience for implementation teams to bring Stage 1 functionality live across the install bases.
