About two weeks ago, Merge Healthcare (http://www.merge.com/) changed the game relative to image sharing cloud services! Over the past two years, a number of companies have been attempting to make a business model out of offering CD replacement services for sharing images.

I recently came across a posting on AuntMinnie.com regarding a study published in the American Journal of Roentgenology ( AJR, October 2011, Vol. 197:4, pp. 1-5) that describes how “breast imaging reports generated with automated speech recognition software are eight times more likely to contain major errors than those generated with conventional dictation transcription.”

I know it’s an interesting time of year for sports, particularly if you are a Wisconsinite such as me! (Need I mention the Packers or the Brewers?) Fortunately, I am not talking sports. I am speaking to experience with PHI in the cloud. I recently blogged on Google’s decision to exit the personal health storage business (Google Rains on the Cloud, June 30, 2011), and suggested it would be a boon to others in the market, such as Microsoft’s HealthVault.

I’ve been researching cloud applications lately, and based on my research, I am concerned that imaging services can quickly get confused by all the IT terminology mumbo jumbo! I thought I would take a stab at reviewing several options to raise awareness and make sure service providers understand where vendors are coming from.

Recent dialog on image management reminds me of the Rorschach Ink Blot Test. Psychiatrists often use this test in interpreting personality traits, with different people seeing different things in the image. Perhaps the healthcare industry could use such a test when it comes to the perception of what is included in healthcare imaging, as healthcare IT personnel can quickly become confused in trying to address all the different needs.
