In case you missed it, it's been discovered that Scott Thompson, the new CEO of Yahoo, has allowed what he calls an "inaccuracy" to be reflected in his official bio. It seems that Scott didn't feel his (legitimate) degree in business administration with an emphasis in accounting was impressive enough so he fabricated an additional degree in computer science to make himself a better catch.

About a year ago, I worked on a search assignment for an extremely innovative healthcare IT company that was seeking to fill a Chief Marketing Officer position. I've had the pleasure of knowing this team personally for several years now, and count them amongst my favorite clients, as they are all kind, thoughtful, sharp, friendly, and yes, I'm guessing they are brave, clean, and reverent, as well. And (and this is key) - they were all male.

In addition to several client meetings, this was the day of two big events that promised to be the most satisfying of the week from my perspective, and neither let me down. Additionally, two fantastic meals were included - bonus! I just wish I had read the sign on the minibar.

Usually I spend this day in client meetings, reserving the evening for my two favorite social events of the conference - Healthcare Informatics magazine's Innovator Awards reception, and the famous HIStalk party. I began the day thinking this would most decidedly be the plan, but. . . well, let's just say it's good to have a plan, but you just never know where you'll end up at the end of the day.

Can't make it to HIMSS12? The fact that this year's conference is in Vegas should provide some added excitement and spectacle. Certainly some added spectacle is always welcomed on these trips. I'll do my best to report on the sights and sounds of conference for those of you who couldn't make it this year, and hopefully do so with ease on this slick new keyboard I just purchased for my iPad.

Whether it's your first time to attend the HIMSS conference, your fourth (as in my case), or your umpteenth, if you are heading to HIMSS12 as an active job-seeker, there are a few items you should not leave home without. For the rest of us who are passive job-seekers (and that should include all the rest of us), this list may prove to be useful, as well.

We all know that when the home life suffers, the work life suffers. So it isn’t really a stretch for a Healthcare IT Careers blogger to offer love life advice, right? Plus, I worked in a flower shop in my early years, and I’m female – so I know a bit about these matters, too. So without further adieu, here are 3 secrets that every man should know about sending flowers on Valentine’s Day:

Just using the traditional interview questions that we've used for years does not give you the hiring manager enough information about the candidate. Behavioral-style interviewing, on the other hand, helps predict future behavior by examining past behavior. This method of interviewing is used by many organizations (including executive search professionals) to better assess candidates before making a critical hiring decision.

I spoke to a very bright candidate last month who accepted a job that went south very quickly. In just a matter of days he knew he had a major career mulligan to deal with. It happens. You start a new job and realize all that glitters is not gold. How are you to know? There are lots of signals to watch for in your first few weeks at a new job, but I would especially be on the lookout for these five show-stopping signs.

If you've ever been terminated from a job, you aren't alone. We interview plenty of candidates who admit they've left a previous employer via “mutual consent.” Translation: they were given the choice to leave or be terminated. It happens. It doesn't have to be a death sentence for the remainder of your working life.

It's always tough when I have to call a seasoned HCIT professional to let them know they finished second on a search assignment. Let's face it-when all is said and done, second place is still second place. Hearing the client decided to make someone else an offer is painful for the candidate and not fun for me, but it's not the end of the world, either! Candidates in this situation are being given the chance to learn and become better prepared for when the next opportunity arises. And it will.

Making hiring an important decision is the single most important element in building world class technology and HCIT delivery teams. As CIO, you will be competing with multiple market forces in the months and years ahead. This will be challenging at times, but in the end, you can't compromise the basic principle of hiring the right-and the best-talent available.
