Let's face it ladies, it's already tough enough out there. If you find yourself doing any of these five things, it's time to make some changes (and know you're not alone - I've been guilty of every one at one time or another, too).

Language, Liquor, and Lies

People are simply amazing, wonderful creatures to watch, especially in an interview setting. Some candidates prepare for days while others rely on their people skills to get them through without any preparation whatsoever. Bad move. To totally rely on your gift of the gab is risky, especially when the interviewer begins to ask questions – or peels back the layers of the onion. Without some advance prep, most candidates just can’t keep it up - a few softballs - and then, game over.

It’s rare to hear from a candidate that he/she did not feel good about their interaction with the hiring manager. My radar goes up when they say “They loved me!”

Check your EGO at the Door, Please

I hear it from clients all the time - candidates who apparently do no wrong, can part the Red Sea and can literally (if needed) 'walk on water'. Why? I’ll never know. When dealing with candidates' large egos, I lose interest quickly. Life’s too short.

So you find out one of your lieutenants has a part-time gig and is moonlighting after-hours. Hmmm. What is a hiring manager to do? In today’s economic climate it’s certainly NOT unusual for employees to do whatever it takes to weather the storm.

Achieving meaningful use of electronic health records (EHRs) as part of the mission to improve outcomes has become one of the top strategic missions of most health systems. The increasing importance of healthcare technology in the strategic landscape is changing the manner in which hospitals operate. It also has accelerated the demand for a clinical IT skill set and physician IT leadership. Physicians are stepping into the role, often referred to as the chief medical information officer (CMIO), and moving these initiatives ahead without the benefit of a playbook or roadmap. As the role grows in importance, we see it evolving.

I've been working on a difficult search for the past month or so, trying to help a prominent hospital facility fill a critical project management leadership role for their brand new Epic implementation project. This particular position has several experience and certification requirements that are tough to find. Therefore I was very excited when I located one such professional who not only filled the bill, but he lived in the area of the project and therefore cut out the relocation or commuting costs for the client. Sweet! But sweet can quickly turn sour. . .

As HR budgets are slashed and technology improves, more and more recruiters and hiring managers are turning to video interviews to conduct that first critical “face-to-face” encounter. Whether you are the interviewer or the interviewee, success or failure may very well hinge on preparation. Consider these tips before you cue Mr. DeMille:

Listen for the Train

Last week I received one of those oh-so-familiar calls from a very strong HCIT leader who I've never spoken to before. He reached out (I'm guessing) to throw out a safety net as his organization is beginning the integration process of merging with another health system. We exchanged pleasantries, and he quickly got to the heart of the matter. He said "I think I'm OK for now and that my position should be secure.

Well I was sure that there would be major adjustments to be made when I left the military after 21 years. I guess the biggest cultural change came down to the uniform. In the military you always know who is in charge by all the “ornaments” in the uniform. The more the colors and “bling,” the higher up the food chain they are, especially the Army-they are all about the bling!

Time to Go Pinocchio

In case you missed it, it's been discovered that Scott Thompson, the new CEO of Yahoo, has allowed what he calls an "inaccuracy" to be reflected in his official bio. It seems that Scott didn't feel his (legitimate) degree in business administration with an emphasis in accounting was impressive enough so he fabricated an additional degree in computer science to make himself a better catch.
