Pennsylvania Reaches Direct Messaging Goals

According to the Pennsylvania eHealth Collaborative, the company responsible for developing health information technology to advance health information exchange (HIE) in Pennsylvania, 3,449 healthcare providers in the state have signed up for DIRECT messaging. This exceeds the 1,000 goal set by the federal government.

According to new research from the Orem, Utah-based KLAS Research, various providers in the health information exchange (HIE) market have expressed dissatisfaction with their vendors thanks to continued connectivity issues. The report, "Health Information Exchange 2012: Muddled in Interfaces, looked at the insights of more than 200 providers, who cited inadequate support around building timely interfaces for even the highest rated vendors.

eHealth Exchange Expects to Double Size in Next Year

As the NwHIN Exchange transitions from a federal program to a public/private partnership, its pace of growth is accelerating. The new organization, rebranded the eHealth Exchange, has 34 organizations in production now, with six more expected to join by the end of the year, said Mariann Yeager, interim executive director of Healtheway, the organization that is providing the infrastructure and governance to support the exchange of data that eHealth Exchange participants use to further their respective missions. “We had 10 applications last week alone,” Yeager told the Oct. 17 HIT Standards Committee meeting. “We expect to double participation in the next year.”

Florida HIE Focuses on Direct Messaging

With the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) encouraging providers to adopt Direct, many state health information exchanges (HIEs) are shifting their focus to Direct as a way for providers to meet meaningful use criteria. Florida, like Tennessee and Oregon, are keeping infrastructure costs low and lean to remain sustainable after ONC funds run out.

Massachusetts Launches Statewide HIE

The Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC), a non-profit aimed at improving healthcare through IT, recently announced that the health information exchange (HIE) has officially launched in the state by MeHI, the Massachusetts eHealth Institute. The HIE is officially known as the Massachusetts Health Information Highway (HIway). At an event, the state’s Governor, Deval Patrick executed the first transaction transmitting his own health record between two hospitals on opposite ends of the Commonwealth. Earlier this year, Patrick announced Massachusetts got funds from CMS to build its statewide HIE.

Thanks to a new established public-private partnership of states, public agencies, federally-funded health information exchanges (HIEs), and health information technology companies, more than half of the U.S. population and their healthcare providers may have access to health data shared across multiple states and systems. The partnership has established a program that will certify and test EHRs and other health IT systems to transfer data within and across state boundaries.

MAeHC to Serve as Executive Director of NEHEN

The Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC), a non-profit organization aimed at producing EHR deployment, health information exchange (HIE), and quality measure reporting, announced recently that is has been selected by the New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), a collaborative, payer, and provider-directed solution, to serve as the management services organization for NEHEN operations, which will aim to bring forth a regional HIE. MAeHC will take charge of the organization’s executive management, business development, and operations management as NEHEN continues to align its services with state HIE efforts and evolving customer needs.

Colorado HIE Expands, Adds Hospitals

The Denver-based Colorado Regional Health Information Organization (COHRIO), a non-profit organization dedicated to rolling out the statewide health information exchange (HIE), announced that it has gotten all six northern Colorado hospitals connected to its HIE. On a state level, there are currently 27 hospitals, over 290 office-based providers, 29 long-term and post-acute care facilities and two behavioral health centers connected to the CORHIO HIE.

As health information technology and health information exchanges (HIEs) make progress on improving the quality of healthcare, one area that has received limited research is how HIEs can provide timely access to clinical information in response to a disaster. That's the subject of the final report, released in July, of the Southeast Regional HIT-HIE Collaboration (SERCH), which makes recommendations to improve how the nation's ability to respond to natural disasters through the use of HIEs.

I was fascinated to read the September 17 joint announcement from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that those two federal departments had successfully demonstrated the successful use of metadata tagging in the exchange of patient health data.
