In anticipation of its 2013 Annual Conference in New Orleans, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) is teaming with BioDistrict New Orleans, a non-profit focused on economic development in one area of the city, to booster city-wide workforce health IT initiatives. The two organizations say they will work together to cater and provide resources to recognize the growing demand for skilled health IT workers in the area.

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has spoken out against the recent call by four House Republican leaders to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to “immediately suspend the distribution of incentive payments until [the Department] promulgates universal interoperable standards.” HIMSS says too much progress has been made to the adoption of EHRs and the exchange of health information to suspend the incentive program.

The Healthcare Transformation Project will hold an “interactive and innovative forum, with peer-to-peer discussion and debate,” held from Nov. 14-16, at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

The Kansas City-based Truman Medical Centers (TMC) has received recognition from HIMSS Analytics, the research/analytics arm of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), as a Stage 7 Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM) facility. EMRAM, scored on eight levels, tracks EMR progress at hospitals and health systems.

Even with the delay to the start of attestation, these EHR vendors, with large client bases, are acknowledging that time is of the essence.

The Chicago-based research arm of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), HIMSS Analytics is set to track the IT adoption in more than 28,000 ambulatory facilities. The facilities, which will be tracked in the HIMSS Analytics database, will be those that are part of a hospital or hospital system, such as physician practices, clinics, outpatient centers, and specialty clinics.

In the opening keynote address to the HIMSS Virtual Conference and Expo on June 6, the CEO of MedVirginia, one of the pioneering health information exchanges in the country, offered up some reflections on HIE evolution and future direction. Among other things, Michael Matthews said that the focus on return on investment is holding HIEs to a higher financial standard than other aspects of treatment.
