Shannon won third place in HCI’s recent IT Innovators Award program for implementing an automated radio-frequency identification (RFID)-based system that dealt with the issue of hand-hygiene. As a result of this initiative, Shannon lowered hospital acquired infections by 62 percent.

Feds Launch New Version of Open Source HIE Platform

In a blog post, the director of federal health architecture at the Office for the National Coordinator of Health IT (ONC), Lauren Thompson, announced the arrival of version 4.0 of the government's CONNECT software. CONNECT, which is an open source health information exchange (HIE) platform, has been a joint effort between ONC, the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, the Social Security Administration, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

MD Anderson Announces Analytics Initiative

MD Anderson, the Houston-based cancer center, has announced its going to start up an organization-wide analytics initiative, aimed at creating new types of personalized cancer treatments. The cancer center said it will use the Redwood Shores, Calif.-based Oracle to lay the foundation for this analytics initiative, which will aim to bring together clinical, genomic, financial, administrative and operational information from internal and external sources.
