According to a survey from Tampa, Fla.-based staffing solutions firm, Kforce Healthcare Solutions, more than 70 percent of healthcare professionals say the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) proposed rule to move the compliance date to 2014 will not affect their decision to continue progress with ICD-10 planning and implementation efforts. The survey of more than 300 healthcare professionals explored ICD-9 to ICD-10 transition readiness.

The turmoil surrounding the development of a statewide health information exchange in California has led to another significant change. The California Health and Human Services Agency (CHHS) announced last week that the Institute for Population Health Improvement at the University of California-Davis will take over HIE implementation from Cal eConnect, the Emeryville, Calif.-based non-profit, public benefit corporation created to develop California's HIE.

In a blog post by the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Farzad Mostashari, M.D., the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) has announced the creation of the Office of the Chief Medical Officer and an Office of Consumer eHealth. The primary function of the Office of the Chief Medical Officer will be to infuse a clinical perspective across ONC on all activities which have clinical implications. The Office of Consumer eHealth will work on consumer engagement.

Well I was sure that there would be major adjustments to be made when I left the military after 21 years. I guess the biggest cultural change came down to the uniform. In the military you always know who is in charge by all the “ornaments” in the uniform. The more the colors and “bling,” the higher up the food chain they are, especially the Army-they are all about the bling!

About a year ago, I worked on a search assignment for an extremely innovative healthcare IT company that was seeking to fill a Chief Marketing Officer position. I've had the pleasure of knowing this team personally for several years now, and count them amongst my favorite clients, as they are all kind, thoughtful, sharp, friendly, and yes, I'm guessing they are brave, clean, and reverent, as well. And (and this is key) - they were all male.

According to research from Kansas City-based Integrated Healthcare Strategies, a national healthcare consulting firm, more hospitals have begun to staff changes based on the ICD-10 transition. The research, the sixth variation of the firm’s Salary Increase, Incentive, and Benefit Updates Survey, states nearly 60 percent of the respondents reported that they anticipate some type of staffing change based on ICD-10.

If you're like me, you never want to think that bad things are going to happen, especially if - like me - you have an incurably optimistic streak. I like that glass-half-full approach to the game of life (and always have). Of course, that's all subject to change when a (she thought) super-knowledgeable hiring manager decides that executive search should be an easy to pick up hobby and talks HCIT circles around me on subjects like what technology will someday soon replace cloud computing, etc. In this case, things started to look even less promising when that hiring manager went one step further and took over the search she was paying me to do.

When it comes to hiring, I've never really seen the secret sauce. Sure, there are lots of hurdles to overcome (and plenty of boxes the hiring manager must check), but there isn't a silver bullet that a candidate can fire off to impress someone enough to employ them on the first (date) interview. Just don't tell that to a really qualified HCIT candidate I interviewed earlier this month!
