When it comes to patients’ skills and knowledge on their care, more equals less, according to the recently published findings of one research team. The study found the most tuned in patients cost 8-to-21 percent less than the costs of patients with the lowest level of activation. It’s just one more piece of evidence that supports this growing movement.

eClinicalWorks, a Westborough, Mass.-based EHR vendor, has announced it's launching a patient engagement-focused initiative on the back of a $25 million investment in the area over the next 12 months. eClinicalWorks, which boasts of eight million users for its patient portal, says it will focus on developing a mobile app for patients that gives patients access to their own and family electronic health records (EHRs).

According to a new report from startup accelerator firm, Rock Health, $1.4 billion was invested into venture capital for digital health companies in 2012, a 46 percent growth from the previous year.
