According to a new study from researchers at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), EHRs are widely used by California physicians, but many of their systems are not designed to meet meaningful use standards. The research report says while 71 percent of California physicians have an EHR system, only 30 percent have one with the functionalities needed to achieve meaningful use requirements from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS).

On May 15 the Office of the National Coordinator published a Request for Information (RFI) on governance of the nationwide health information network (NwHIN). At their May 24 meeting, Health IT Standards Committee members debated some of the fine points involved in setting up another accreditation and validation system to make trusted exchange of health data easier. If ONC’s basic framework is adopted, CIOs may have to add at least two new acronyms to their vocabulary: CTE (Conditions for Trusted Exchange) and NVE (NwHIN-Validated Entity).

According to a research report from Cambridge, Mass.-based Chilmark Research rapid growth and evolution will continue to define the nascent health information exchange (HIE) market, even though federal funds earmarked for them have begun to run dry this year. The report, 2012 HIE Market Report: Analysis and Trends, says the market is making a significant shift to serving healthcare organizations (HCOs) of all sizes – an enterprise market.

Framingham, Mass.-based research firm, IDC Health, has revealed a report that’s aimed at helping healthcare organizations establish enterprise or community health information exchanges (HIEs). The new report provides a framework for establishing a new HIO based on keen insight from successful early adopters. It includes the major components of success: stakeholder engagement, communications, data governance, HIE solution selection, project management and implementation, EHR deployment, clinical utilization, privacy and security and funding and sustainability.

Last month the Washington, D.C.-based National eHealth Collaborative (NeHC) released the results of its 2012 NeHC Stakeholder Survey, which featured the biggest challenges to achieving widespread health information exchange. Sixty-one percent of respondents said funding and sustainability was the main obstacle, while 53 percent said interoperability standards were hindering HIE adoption.

With federal health information exchange (HIE) funding drying up in 2014 and with the release of the Affordable Care Act, health plans are increasingly being viewed as key stakeholders in the HIE sustainability equation. As I was telling someone this week, I’m still digging out from HIMSS12 that took place last week in Las Vegas. Not only did I conduct a lot of great interviews with interesting folks like MAeHC’s Micky Tripathi, Huntington Hospital’s Rebecca Armato, and NeHC’s Kate Berry, I sat in on a ton of great sessions. A couple of sessions that stuck out were from the HIE Symposium which delved into timely topics of HIE sustainability and interstate collaborations

The Washington, D.C.-based National eHealth Collaborative (NeHC) recently released the results of a survey to the attendees of its NeHC University recent program on health information exchanges (HIEs), called, "Introduction to the HIE Landscape." NeHC says the results of the survey will determine the development of future NeHC University programs and provide valuable insight into key issues and challenges facing the world of HIE.
