Wyoming Uses No-Cost EHR as Platform for Population Health

The Wyoming Department of Health is using its no-cost electronic health record (EHR) program as a platform to build a sophisticated central database to manage the health of its Medicaid population effectively and use the information to effect policy changes. Earlier this month, The Wyoming Department of Health announced that it is the first state to offer a free, fully certified EHR to Medicaid providers in the state.

Study: EHRs Widely Used, Don’t Meet Federal Standards

According to a new study from researchers at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), EHRs are widely used by California physicians, but many of their systems are not designed to meet meaningful use standards. The research report says while 71 percent of California physicians have an EHR system, only 30 percent have one with the functionalities needed to achieve meaningful use requirements from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS).

Maine to Pilot First Statewide Medical Image Archive

HealthInfoNet and some of Maine's largest healthcare organizations will begin piloting the nation's first statewide medical image archive to reduce the cost of storage and transport of electronic medical images and share these images through the health information exchange (HIE). HealthInfoNet has shared radiological reports for several years, says Todd Rogow, director of information technology at HealthInfoNet, but it was clearly a clinician-led effort to get images into the central archive.

NwHIN Trust Framework Involves Establishing Another Accreditation Regime

On May 15 the Office of the National Coordinator published a Request for Information (RFI) on governance of the nationwide health information network (NwHIN). At their May 24 meeting, Health IT Standards Committee members debated some of the fine points involved in setting up another accreditation and validation system to make trusted exchange of health data easier. If ONC’s basic framework is adopted, CIOs may have to add at least two new acronyms to their vocabulary: CTE (Conditions for Trusted Exchange) and NVE (NwHIN-Validated Entity).

Last month the Washington, D.C.-based National eHealth Collaborative (NeHC) released the results of its 2012 NeHC Stakeholder Survey, which featured the biggest challenges to achieving widespread health information exchange. Sixty-one percent of respondents said funding and sustainability was the main obstacle, while 53 percent said interoperability standards were hindering HIE adoption.
