The Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC), a non-profit aimed at improving healthcare through IT, recently announced that the health information exchange (HIE) has officially launched in the state by MeHI, the Massachusetts eHealth Institute. The HIE is officially known as the Massachusetts Health Information Highway (HIway). At an event, the state’s Governor, Deval Patrick executed the first transaction transmitting his own health record between two hospitals on opposite ends of the Commonwealth. Earlier this year, Patrick announced Massachusetts got funds from CMS to build its statewide HIE.

Thanks to a new established public-private partnership of states, public agencies, federally-funded health information exchanges (HIEs), and health information technology companies, more than half of the U.S. population and their healthcare providers may have access to health data shared across multiple states and systems. The partnership has established a program that will certify and test EHRs and other health IT systems to transfer data within and across state boundaries.

According to a recent survey from the Washington D.C.-based Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), clinicians believe that electronic exchange of health information will have a positive impact on healthcare, but many say interoperability is a huge barrier to its success. Of the clinicians surveyed, about 70 percent say the lack of an information exchange infrastructure, and the cost of setting up and maintaining interfaces and exchanges will prevent health information exchange (HIE) from happening.

The Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC), a non-profit organization aimed at producing EHR deployment, health information exchange (HIE), and quality measure reporting, announced recently that is has been selected by the New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), a collaborative, payer, and provider-directed solution, to serve as the management services organization for NEHEN operations, which will aim to bring forth a regional HIE. MAeHC will take charge of the organization’s executive management, business development, and operations management as NEHEN continues to align its services with state HIE efforts and evolving customer needs.

Remember back in middle school gym class when the team captains began the agonizing process of selecting teams for whatever the sport you were playing at the time. You'd cringe and hope you wouldn't be the last kid standing waiting to be chosen for a team. Well, that seems to be a possible consideration for organizations that are still pondering their next steps for health information exchange (HIE) and community alignment.

The ECRI Institute, a Plymouth Meeting, Pa.-based independent nonprofit organization which researches the best approaches to improving patient care, recently conducted a survey with s2a, a health information exchange (HIE) and interoperability consultant, and found that 46 percent of healthcare leaders have yet to assess capacity for an HIE. The findings of the study are found in a new ECRI white paper, “Crossing the Connectivity Chasm: Pinpointing Gaps in Readiness to Exchange Health Information,” to determine whether healthcare leaders are prepared to share data across a healthcare community to improve coordination and quality of care.

The Denver-based Colorado Regional Health Information Organization (COHRIO), a non-profit organization dedicated to rolling out the statewide health information exchange (HIE), announced that it has gotten all six northern Colorado hospitals connected to its HIE. On a state level, there are currently 27 hospitals, over 290 office-based providers, 29 long-term and post-acute care facilities and two behavioral health centers connected to the CORHIO HIE.

According to a new study from the Burlington, V.T.-based research company, Capsite, 43 percent of U.S. physician groups are planning on joining a health information exchange (HIE). The study of more than 950 physician groups on the market adoption, market share, market opportunity and vendor mind share across the U.S. physician market, also looked at the impact of the HITECH Act of 2009 had on physician groups in terms of attesting to meaningful use.

I was fascinated to read the September 17 joint announcement from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that those two federal departments had successfully demonstrated the successful use of metadata tagging in the exchange of patient health data.
