The Massachusetts Governor’s office recently announced the creation of a telehealth nursing center, which aims to help victims of sexual assault by providing around-the-clock medical assistance in sexual assault treatment services to providers who do not offer anything in this area. It’s being called the Massachusetts Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Telenursing Center and is getting $3.3 million in federal grant funding from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Citing needs for more time and to cut costs, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Eric Shinseki announced they would forgo plans to build a new health records system to be used jointly by the departments and instead pursue less expensive technologies to make their respective systems more interoperable.

eClinicalWorks, a Westborough, Mass.-based EHR vendor, has announced it's launching a patient engagement-focused initiative on the back of a $25 million investment in the area over the next 12 months. eClinicalWorks, which boasts of eight million users for its patient portal, says it will focus on developing a mobile app for patients that gives patients access to their own and family electronic health records (EHRs).

According to a new report from the Austin, Texas-based software buying consulting firm, Software Advice, 21.89 percent of all meaningful use attestations for a complete EHR through October 2012 were done using a product from Epic Systems Corporation (Verona, Wisc.). The report says that in total Epic has 23,446 complete EHR meaningful use attestations, nearly doubling the next closest vendor, Allscripts (Chicago), which has 12,741.

According to a report from SearchHealthIT’s Don Fluckinger, Cerner Corp. (Kansas City) and McKesson (San Francisco) are in talks to form an alliance that would make their EHR patient data interoperable. SearchHealthIT cites unnamed sources and says that the announcement could come as soon as the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2013 annual conference, held March 3-7 this year in New Orleans.

According to a new report from the Washington, D.C.-based mHealth Alliance, countries in sub-Saharan Africa have the highest number of mobile health (mHealth) projects when compared to similar low and middle income countries (LMICs).
