2012 Keynote Speakers

P01 — Opening Keynote Presentation

David Muntz,
Principal Deputy National Coordinator for Health IT in the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT

In January of this year, David Muntz became Principal Deputy National Coordinator for Health IT, one of the most senior leadership positions in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), within the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). As a key member of the leadership team at ONC, he is now overseeing the activities of four offices within ONC, and reporting directly to the National Coordinator.

One of the most distinguished leaders in the healthcare information technology world, Muntz spent decades in healthcare IT executive management before joining ONC, most recently during a six-year period as Senior Vice President-IS and CIO at Baylor Health Care System, based in Dallas, Texas. Prior to his tenure at Baylor, Muntz had been Senior Vice President and CIO at Texas Health Resources (Arlington), where he helped lead informatics management for 16 years.

Muntz has received broad recognition for his accomplishments, including being named CHIME 2010 Innovator of the Year in 2010 by the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME).

Upon receiving the news of Muntz's appointment to ONC, the Chicago-based Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) released the following statement: "HIMSS is pleased to learn that David Muntz has been named as the first Principal Deputy National Coordinator for Health IT in the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT. HIMSS has had the opportunity to work with Muntz for many years, and we have seen his collaborative approach to accelerating the adoption of health IT solutions. His practical experience as CIO of Baylor Health Care System will provide an important perspective to ONC's efforts to develop the roadmap for the Nationwide Health Information Network. We look forward to working with Mr. Muntz in his new capacity."

We at Healthcare Informatics are delighted to welcome David Muntz as the opening keynote speaker at the Healthcare Informatics Executive Summit.
