The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) released its proposed rules for healthcare provider identifiers and electronic transactions/code sets as required by HIPAA. Under the proposed rules for electronic transactions/code sets, electronic data transmissions will be based on the ASC X12 standard.
Proposed rules due later this year are national standards for health plan identifiers, employer identifiers and security and electronic signatures. Final rules will be published approximately six months after a 60-day public review and comment period.
The current rule proposals have been published in the Federal Register and are available for public review and comment until July 6. To obtain copies of the rules, visit DHHS’ Administrative Simplification Web site at aspe.os.dhhs.gov/admnsimp/index.htm.
