We knew that it wasn't going to be easy. We knew that in an industry marked with creative leaders who push technology to the limit, selecting the most innovative would be — at best — challenging. The winners of the fifth annual 2006 Healthcare IT Innovators award come from a background just as varied as their innovations. This group of standouts includes a Saudi Arabian innovator who created a data warehouse and business intelligence tool for analytical reporting, a Boston-based emergency physician, lauded for his bioinformatics, genomics and clinical computing, and a former army colonel whose career spans 26 years of active duty.
After we learned about these creative innovators, about their stumbling blocks and their support systems, we knew we couldn't wait to share their stories with you. So this year, instead of spreading out our innovator stories, we've presented one cohesive package covering all nine (profiles appear in alphabetical order). We hope you enjoy their stories and that you will send us yours. Of course, that will make our job next year even more difficult.
