#6 Vendor in 2007 HIT Revenue: Eclipsys

Posting $477M in 2007 HIT Revenue is Eclipsys, a tad behind Epic. Eclipsys' "Sunrise" suite of HIS applications is selling well thanks to their "subscription fee" pricing approach, brainchild of founder Harvey Wilson. Instead of charging an arm and a leg for a perpetual license fee, the subscription fee is, in essence, a term license, whereby a hospital buys "X" years right to use the system. There are also fees for implementation, hardware, etc., but this approach helps lowers initial capital costs, making the system more attractive to capital-strapped hospitals (of which there are many!). The Sunrise suite of systems was built through many acquisitions over the years of leading products like TDS (clinicals), TSI (Decision Support), SDK (Revenue Cycle), Emtek (ICU), etc. Eclipsys was an early adopter of Microsoft's ".net" architecture, under the rubric of "Sunrise XA." After some early teething problems, it gives them a bit of a design edge on other high-end clinical systems in the techie world.Â
